Silverfish

Silverfish

Appearance:

  • Color: Silver to brown
  • Legs: 6
  • Shape: Elongated oval
  • Size: ½” – 1″
  • Region: Found throughout the U.S.

General Information: This silverfish gets its name from its silvery, metallic appearance and fish-like shape and movements. These insects are broad at the front, with long antennae, and tapered toward the rear with three long tails. They have dustlike, delicate scales.  Some can also havestripes or be mottled with gray or brown coloring. Silverfish have no wings, but are able to run very fast. They tend to hide their presence from humans, which means any damage they cause can go unnoticed.
Habits: Silverfish tend to feed on paper items, glue, clothing and food items, such as flour and rolled oats. They can live up to a year without food, but require a high humidity environment. They move fast and are typically nocturnal.
Silverfish have a tendency to travel long distances while looking for food which can make it difficult to locate the infestation source.
Habitat: Silverfish are found throughout the U.S. and are typically seen in moist, humid areas in the home, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics.  Silverfish are rarely found outdoors. It is common to find large populations of silverfish in houses with cedar shake shingles.
Risks: While silverfish are mainly a nuisance pest, they can contaminate food and damage paper goods such as wallpaper and books. Fortunately, for most items, damage usually is not severe. However, if the infestation is left uncontrolled, rarebook collections, as well as other antiquities, can sustain irreparable damage.

Prevention:

  • Consider a dehumidifier for your home, repair leaky pipes and drains and eliminate or repair any moldy or wet wood.
  • Don’t keep old books and magazines in areas where silverfish are usually found like basements, attics and garages.
  • Store starched linens in sealed plastic bags.
  • Keep food items such as flour and sugar in tight containers.
  • Periodically clean out closets, cabinets and storage containers.
